Paul WrightModern Artists Gallery presents:
Masterpiece 2012
Paul Wright
Modern Artists Gallery

BP National Portrait Award Finalist unveils his new collection of paintings at Modern Artists Gallery.

The traditional meaning of the word ‘masterpiece’ is a work considered an artist's best or most representative and this new collection by Paul Wright richly deserves the title.

Paul Wright has exhibited at Modern Artists Gallery, Berkshire since the early stages of his career, and enjoyed his first solo show at the gallery in 2006. The success of the show prompted his successful entry to the BP National Portrait Award and his career has snowballed at an astonishing rate since. Critical affirmation of this young artists’ work has come not just via the National Portrait Award but also inclusion among the hallowed walls of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, London’s Discerning Eye exhibition and a recent stint as Artist in Residence at Texas University.

"Paul Wright has emerged as an accomplished and immensely talented artist; a defiant standard-bearer for the qualities of technique, craftsmanship, colour and texture in painting. Although he is clearly influenced by the best traditions of fine art, his approach is individual, contemporary and powerful". Darryl McCarthy Art Critic 2010

Skip 'Little Axe' MacdonaldArlington Arts presents:
Skip "Little Axe" Macdonald
Arlington Arts Centre, Mary Hare, Newbury

Skip McDonald made his name as an integral part of the Sugar Hill house band playing on some of the most influential early rap classics.

As part of Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound crew he has made some of the most adventurous and praised UK music of the last twenty years. Little Axe is the return to the blues that Skip grew up with and learned from his father.

The sound is raw, stripped down and intense, the message in the lyrics as important as Skips virtuoso musicianship. The acoustic tradition of the blues crashes into the 21st century with Skip’s use of effects that create his unique brand of Dub Gospelblues. “Channelling Howlin’ Wolf and Son House via the cavernous dub of Keith Hudson and King Tubby... raw, heartfelt and otherworldly”

“Foreboding and playful;blues for modern times” Uncut

Artists at Lower Way FarmArtists at Lower Way Farm presents:
Artists at Lower Way Farm
Lower Way Farm, Lower Way, Thatcham, RG19 3TL

This year, a lively exhibition with a real sense of fun will take over Lower Way Farm including sculpture, ceramics, painting and illustration from five established local artists.

Sophie Waite’s rustic ceramic objects sit beautifully alongside Nuala Whales’ emotive oil paintings.

Diana Pattenden’s beautiful bronze sculptures feature animals with real personality and an energy that brings them to life.

Jo Burton’s paintings personify the ornate with layers of collage, paint and gold leaf, in stark contrast to the quirky illustrations of Vikki Aust with her vividly imagined characters and their equally abnormal worlds.

The Toy HeartsArlington Arts Centre presents:
The Toy Hearts
Arlington Arts Centre, Mary Hare, Newbury

The Toy Hearts are one of the UK’s hottest acoustic acts right now, their style of music neatly placing them at the forefront of the resurgence of interest in folk and Americana music. 2010 saw this hard working band touring across the UK, Europe and the USA.

The culmination of their work so far being the national release of their third album ‘Femme Fatale’ last September, which was recorded in Nashville TN earlier in the year. Fronted by sister’s Hannah (mandolin) and Sophia (guitar), accompanied by banjo/dobro, bass and fiddle, the band draws upon the genres of Bluegrass, Western Swing and Gypsy Jazz for inspiration.

By combining original songwriting, sweet sister harmonies, hard driving rhythms and energetic performances, The ToyHearts have developed a truly unique sound that leaves their audiences breathless and ready for more!
