 The Corn Exchange presents:
Nonsense / Michael Rosen & The Homemade Orchestra
Corn Exchange, Newbury
Michael Rosen (Children's Laureate) and The Homemade Orchestra, an ensemble of some UK's top jazz musicians, join forces to ignite the surreal, playful and unexpected in Rosen's Nonsense poems. In an inspiring and original evening of music and words, Michael Rosen will narrate the poetry accompanied by the ensemble in series of new pieces by Colin Riley.
Before this, the first half will comprise music from the Homemade Orchestra's third album, Leap of Faith. Known for shaking up the way new music is conceived and presented, the groups music is by turns tantalising, mischievous and anarchic - always with a warmth and beating heart at the core.
The Corn Exchange is delighted to be welcoming the group for its first visit, premiering Nonsense at the start of its UK tour.

Arlington Arts Centre presents:
Fabric of Life
exhibition
Arlington Arts Centre, Mary Hare, Newbury
Arlington Arts Centre have brought together a group of textile artists, whose work plays with the relationship between their art form and its foundation in domestic life.
For many there is an intrinsic association of textiles with home life, from the basics of clothing to elaborate furnishing. What were once commonly learned and highly valued skills have, with new technology become increasingly redundant. Many artists now work with a cultural memory of these specialist skills applying them to new and inventive formats.
Fabric of Life will show a diverse collection of creative textile art specifically designed to question any preconceptions of this art form.
Artist's talk by internationally acclaimed textile artist Michael Brennand-Wood on Monday 22 September 6.30pm

 The Watermill presents:
Our Country's Good
Watermill, Bagnor, Newbury
by Timberlake Wertenbaker
Directed by Alex Clifton
Designed by Paul Burgess
Lighting by Katharine Williams
Botany Bay 1789, and a young English Lieutenant directs a play, a light-hearted comedy called The Recruiting Officer. His actors are a makeshift troupe of transported convicts, many of them illiterate, his leading lady is condemned to hang and his fellow officers are vehemently opposed to the endeavour. Against all odds and in the face of brutality, degradation and punishment, the actors, and their jailors learn cooperation, compassion and to hope.
Wertenbaker’s modern classic, filled with vibrant characters written with humour and compassion, illustrates the extraordinary human ability to transcend circumstances and the power of theatre to change lives.
The cast includes Jason Baughan who appeared in Propeller's Twelfth Night, The Taming of The Shrew and The Winter's Tale and Tanya Franks from Eastenders, Pulling and now appearing in the new BBC2 comedy show, The Cup. Paul Lloyd appeared in The Globe's King Lear, The Frontline, Othello, Anthony & Cleopatra and In Extremis. Simon Thorp's work for Shared Experience includes War and Peace, After Mrs Rochester and Madame Bovery and Orlando Wells starred in The National Theatre's production of The History Boys. Other cast members include John Cummins, Ruth Everett, Alex Maher, Rex Obano and Tonya Smith.
Please note, this play contains some strong language and sexual references.
