Path of Miracles

Nonsuch Singers

7:30pm

Join Nonsuch Singers and our conductor Tom Bullard in the beautiful and atmospheric surroundings of Douai Abbey, for our performance of this 21st-century classic. Commissioned by Tenebrae in 2005, Path of Miracles takes its inspiration from the Camino de Santiago, the great pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The four movements reflect the journey from the abbey of Roncesvalles, through the great cathedrals of Leon and Burgos, finally arriving in Santiago itself. Joby Talbot's choral depiction of this is no ordinary piece; richly scored in 17 parts, the music encompasses everything from plainsong to minimalism, woven through with musical mysticism and drama. This will be an all-encompassing performance, as the music shifts and turns, surrounding the audience from all sides.

Tickets are available until 5pm on the day of the concert, - thereafter on sale on the door only .  Purchase tickets here

Journeys & Belonging

7:30pm

After the resounding success of their performance of The Dream of Gerontius, which received high praise from critics and audience alike, Newbury Choral Society is breaking new ground with a programme of contemporary works by some of the most skilled composers of choral music working today. Bob Chilcott’s The Voyage and Cecilia McDowall’s Everyday Wonders: The Girl from Aleppo both deal with contemporary issues through music, exploring loneliness, connectedness and struggle in different and innovative ways. The Voyage is about our journey through life, with musings about the importance of childhood memories. In McDowall’s own words, The Girl from Aleppo “is a journey of hope and extraordinary fortitude against all odds”, telling the story of a teenager with cerebral palsy who escaped war at home and sought sanctuary in Europe. American Stephen Paulus composed a wide variety of works, both sacred and secular, choral and orchestral. He contributes The Road Home, based on an American folk tune and frequently performed since its 2001 premiere in Minnesota.
