Founded in 1934 by John Christie and his wife the singer Audrey Mildmay, the Glyndebourne Festival's first Artistic Directors were the conductor Fritz Busch and the director Carl Ebert. Except during the war, performances of the highest international standard have continued to be given every summer in the opera house built by the Christies on their country estate in Sussex, some 50 miles south of London.
